About Me

Hello, my name is Jack Cottingham. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate practicing at Voyages Counseling in Centennial.

I earned my bachelor's degree in psychology from Clemson University in 2018 and my master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Colorado Denver in 2026. I am originally from South Carolina and moved to Colorado in 2021 to pursue counseling.

My Approach to Counseling

My approach is collaborative, client-centered, and grounded in respect for each person's unique experience. I prefer cognitive behavioral therapy with adults and non-directive play therapy with children, but I tailor the work to each client rather than running everyone through the same process.

I also integrate Internal Family Systems, mindfulness, and strengths-based interventions. Which of those shows up in your sessions depends on what you are bringing and what actually helps.

Who I Work With

I work with adults and children in Centennial and the south Denver metro area on men's mental health, depression, problem gambling, grief and loss, and substance use disorders.

Men's mental health. Men often arrive in counseling late, having tried to handle things alone first, and frequently with a presenting problem that is not the real one. I am interested in that work, and I try to make the room easy to be honest in.

Problem gambling. Gambling problems tend to stay hidden longer than most other addictions, partly because there is no physical evidence of them and partly because the shame is severe. Sports betting has made them considerably more common and considerably easier to conceal. If gambling has taken over more of your life, your finances, or your relationships than you want it to, it is worth talking about.

Grief and loss. Grief does not follow a schedule, and it does not always look like sadness. Some of the people I see are grieving something that other people would not recognize as a loss at all.

Substance use. I work with substance use concerns alongside the depression, anxiety, or grief that so often sits underneath them, rather than treating them as a separate problem.

Children. With younger clients, I use non-directive play therapy, which lets a child work through what they are carrying in the language they actually have, rather than asking them to explain themselves like an adult.

What to Expect in Sessions

Sessions are collaborative. I am not going to hand you a diagnosis and a worksheet and send you on your way, and I am not going to sit in silence either. We will figure out together what you want to be different, and then work on it.

I think respect for your experience is the foundation of good counseling. You are the one who knows what your life is actually like. My job is to bring the training, ask useful questions, and help you get somewhere you want to go.

Education and Licensure

I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Colorado Denver in 2026 and my bachelor's degree in psychology from Clemson University in 2018. I am registered with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies as a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate, license number LPCC.0024898, and I practice under clinical supervision.

A Little More About Me

I am originally from South Carolina and have called Colorado home since 2021. Outside of work, I play lacrosse, fish, hunt, read, and game, and I spend as much time outside as I can with my Great Pyrenees, Boogie.
